Mercy Honour Role Inductee

Professor Margaret Tobin (dec.)

Year of Induction 2017

CLASS OF 1970

Professor Margaret Tobin (dec.) was nominated for her excellence in medicine, her outstanding service to the mental health community and her commitment to Mercy in treating and giving those with mental health issues the respect they deserve. Margaret was from the class of 1970. Margaret received a scholarship and studied medicine at Melbourne University in 1978 and then completed her training in psychiatry in 1986. Her enormous confidence and courage enabled her to make momentous change in the public health system for mental health patients across Australia and New Zealand. Margaret’s leadership in making sure that mental health was “everyone’s business” gave her the opportunities to reform and achieve improvements in mental health services. Margaret was just 50 when her life was tragically taken in 2002. Her legacy lives on with the Margaret Tobin Centre in Adelaide, the Margaret Tobin SA Rural Postgraduate Mental Health Scholarships and the RANZCP Margaret Tobin Award and a book by Melissa Sweet, Inside Madness.
